Favorite track: Callaloo and Collards.
ATLANTA, GA — Mausiki Scales, keyboardist and founder/musical director of the acclaimed Atlanta-based afrobeat/funk ensemble Common Ground Collective, is celebrating the undeniable bond between soul food and soul music in his new release “Callaloo and Collards, and Blue Collards [B-side].”
Mausiki gives an ode to Black foodways, including Callaloo, Collards and Turnip Greens, and cultural resilience in the funky tracks on this latest release, which features the vocals of two-time Grammy Award winner Speech, founder and bandleader of acclaimed Arrested Development.
The “Callaloo and Collards and Blue Collards” collaborative also highlights the vocal stylings of performing artists Asantewaa Sunni-Ali, Mia-Lewis Jackson and Trishla Wooten, and features the musicianship of guitarist Alex Jones, trombonist Charles “LC” Williams and saxophonist DeWayne Martin.
According to scholar and arts critic Michael Simanga, Scales’ music deeply connects to the “African spirit and the centuries-old exchange of experiences between African people in the Diaspora.” The single stays true to those roots, bringing creative storytelling and positive messaging throughout, and delivering a funky musical celebration of the bond between soul food and soul music.
Soul, a term also used to describe food, is the key ingredient in “Callaloo and Collards” and “Blue Collards” [B-side]. This single evokes the vibe of folks gathering, particularly in Southern Black spaces, to eat, play dominos, a card game of Spades, or bop, step and skate to soulful music.
In describing “Callaloo and Collards,” Mausiki said he was inspired to deliver one expression within myriad sonic beacons of an African Diaspora, with the epicenter located in Brazil. He wanted to honor the hearty green foodstuffs that have sustained Black Communities during some crucial years, including during the turbulence of modern times.
No matter the challenges that face us, Callaloo, Collards, Turnip Greens continue to be constant companions during Black social gatherings in West Africa, the Caribbean, America and beyond.
